Why Starting Hydrated Matters Before You Train

The Research

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends beginning exercise in a well-hydrated state with normal electrolyte levels. According to its Position Stand on Exercise and Fluid Replacement, athletes should begin drinking fluids several hours before activity when appropriate. This allows the body time to absorb fluids and return to normal hydration before training or competition.

The ACSM also emphasizes that hydration needs vary depending on:

  • Exercise intensity
  • Exercise duration
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Individual sweat rate
