Building Hydration Into a
Real Practice Plan

Every coach believes in hydration. The problem isn't belief. It's structure. Here's how to plan it the same way you plan every other part of your session.

Every coach I know believes in hydration. The problem isn't belief. It's structure.

Most coaches manage hydration reactively — they call a water break when they notice someone looking rough, or when there's a natural pause between drills, or when they happen to remember. It feels like enough. But reactive hydration is always playing catch-up, and by the time you call that break, the performance cost has already been paid.

The solution isn't more time. Most coaches already feel like practice isn't long enough. The solution is structure — treating hydration the same way you treat every other part of your session: planned, scripted, and non-negotiable.

Here's why it matters, what the research says, and a practical template you can use starting at your next practice.

When hydration is left to chance, chance usually loses.

A landmark study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition compared athletes following a prescription hydration plan — one built around their individual sweat rate and sodium loss — to athletes following their normal hydration habits. The results were striking. Athletes on the structured plan jumped 4.53 inches farther, tracked moving objects 0.36 meters per second faster, and showed significantly faster heart rate recovery after the same training session.1 Same athletes. Same workout. Different outcome, purely because of how hydration was managed.

That's not a marginal gain. That's a measurable competitive difference produced by a plan rather than guesswork.

The performance stakes are real on the other side too. Research from Human Kinetics confirms that a fluid deficit of just 2 percent of body weight measurably impairs endurance, strength, reaction time, and the ability to sustain effort.2 A separate study found that sport-specific reaction time was significantly slower after dehydration to approximately 2 percent body mass loss — and critically, the neurological mechanism involves both slowed neural conduction velocity and impaired attention, meaning the athlete isn't just physically slower. They're thinking slower too.3

Two percent sounds small. For a 130-pound athlete, that's less than three pounds of fluid. On a warm afternoon after a school day with little to drink, many athletes start practice already halfway there.

It's worth noting that the world's top sports organizations don't leave hydration to chance either.

For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FIFA implemented mandatory three-minute hydration breaks midway through each half of every match — across all 104 games, in every stadium, regardless of temperature or air conditioning.4 This was a deliberate departure from the previous system, where breaks were only called when the heat index crossed a specific threshold. The reasoning was straightforward: waiting for conditions to become dangerous before prioritizing hydration is the wrong approach. Build it in before conditions become a factor.

If that logic applies to the highest level of professional sport, it applies on your practice field too.

The Template

The Template: A Practice Built Around Hydration

The goal here isn't to redesign your session around water breaks. It's to script hydration into the structure you already use, so it happens automatically and doesn't cost you momentum.

Below is a flexible template that works across sports and age groups. Adjust timing based on your session length and heat zone. The key principle is that every break is planned and placed at a natural transition — between segments, not interrupting them.

Before Practice Starts

Coach's pre-practice checklist (5 minutes before athletes arrive):

  • Check the heat index. This determines your break interval — every 20 minutes in Zone 1, every 15 minutes in Zone 2-3, every 10 minutes in Zone 4.
  • Set water stations at fixed locations around the field. Bottles or coolers should be ready before athletes arrive, not scrambled for mid-practice.
  • Have Acuity electrolyte packets available for sessions expected to exceed 60 minutes or for any Zone 2+ conditions.
  • Confirm your break signal. Use the same cue every time — a whistle pattern, a hand signal, a phrase. Consistency means athletes respond immediately without breaking focus.

Athlete check-in (first 2 minutes of practice):

Ask, out loud, every practice: "Did you drink water today?" It takes five seconds and opens the conversation. Research from the Gatorade Sports Science Institute found that coaches are among the most powerful influences on young athletes' health behaviors — and that healthy hydration practices are most effectively reinforced through consistent modeling and routine.5 Making the question part of the opening sets the tone for everything that follows.

The Practice Session

The structural rule: every break happens at a transition, not an interruption.

Hydration breaks kill momentum when they interrupt a drill that's building intensity. They don't kill momentum when they happen between segments — when you've just finished one block and are setting up the next. That's the key insight most coaches miss. The break isn't stopping practice. It's filling the gap that was already there.

For Zone 3–4 heat conditions (heat index 90°F and above), shorten every interval by 5 minutes and require electrolytes at every break, not just after the 35-minute mark.

Keep Momentum

Running a Break Without Losing Momentum

The fear most coaches have is that structured breaks slow practice down. In reality, unplanned breaks — the ones you call because someone is cramping or you've lost the group's energy — are far more disruptive. A planned 60-second break is invisible. An unplanned 10-minute incident is not.

Here's how to run a break that keeps momentum:

  • Give the next instruction during the break, not after it. "While you're drinking — when we come back, we're running the red zone series. Offense, know your assignments." Athletes drink and mentally prepare simultaneously. The break becomes a transition, not a stoppage.
  • Keep athletes standing or walking slowly. Sitting down drops heart rate and intensity faster than standing. A slow walk to the station and back keeps the body ready to go.
  • Count heads every single time. Five seconds. It's also your best chance to spot the athlete who looks flushed, is moving slowly, or just seems off. You won't always catch it during a drill. You will catch it during a break if you're looking.
  • Use a consistent signal. A study published in PMC found that hydration education alone can change athlete behavior after a single session — but only when it's simple, visual, and consistently reinforced.6 The same applies to your break signal. Athletes who hear the same cue every time respond faster and waste less of your 60 seconds.

The practice plan doesn't end when the session does. As covered in the previous article in this series, the 30 minutes after practice is the most productive recovery window most teams never use.

Build it into your plan explicitly:

  • Immediate: Every athlete drinks before doing anything else. 16–20 oz minimum. Electrolytes required after sessions over 60 minutes or in any Zone 2+ condition.
  • Within 20 minutes: A carbohydrate-protein snack. Communicate this to parents in advance so it's ready. A banana and chocolate milk, a granola bar and Greek yogurt, a recovery shake — anything that starts glycogen replenishment in the window when the body is most receptive.
  • 5–10 minutes of cooldown movement before athletes disperse. Light jogging, dynamic stretching, a slow walk. This alone measurably reduces next-day muscle soreness and accelerates recovery.7

Make these three steps as non-negotiable as warmup. They are part of practice, not optional extras after it.

Education

Why Education Is as Important as the Plan

A template is only as good as the athletes who follow it.

Research published in PMC found that when young athletes received both hydration education and improved water accessibility, their hydration status and endurance performance both improved significantly — more than either intervention produced alone.8 Knowledge and structure together work better than either one separately.

That means sharing the why behind your plan. Tell your athletes what 2 percent dehydration does to reaction time. Show them the urine color chart. Explain why the 35-minute electrolyte break matters differently than the 15-minute water break. The more they understand, the more likely they are to carry these habits into the time you can't control — the school day, the morning, the car ride to practice.

Loop in parents the same way. One email or handout at the start of the season explaining the pre-practice hydration window and the post-practice fueling routine gives families the context to reinforce what you're doing on the field.

Hydration doesn't need its own time slot. It needs its own place in the structure you already have.

Plan the breaks. Script the signal. Set the stations before practice starts. Communicate the why to athletes and parents. And treat the 30 minutes after the whistle as the final segment of every session — because biologically, it is.

The teams that are consistently better conditioned, sharper late in practice, and quicker to recover between sessions aren't doing something exotic. They're just doing this — deliberately, every day.

What this means for coaches

Use the templates above as a starting point, adjust for your sport and conditions, and make hydration a planned part of practice rather than a reaction to it. The structure you build today will show up in performance tomorrow.
